Unfold Guide: How to set up and use Apple Intelligence on your iPhone

Today, we will cover a guide on how to set up and use Apple Intelligence on your iPhone.

Overview: Apple's new Apple Intelligence software suite is currently available on the iPhone 15 Pro, iPhone 15 Pro Max, and iPhone 16 models running iOS 18.2. The suite features three main components: AI-powered writing tools for text summarization, rewriting, and creation; AI image generation tools including Image Playground, Genmoji, and Image Wand; and ChatGPT integration within Siri for enhanced responses and visual intelligence capabilities on iPhone 16.

Setting Up Apple Intelligence:

  • Upgrade to iOS 18.

  • Go to Settings > More for Your iPhone > Set Up Apple Intelligence. This will guide you through the setup process and explain the AI upgrades available.

  • Enable notification summaries (optional). This feature summarizes multiple notifications from the same apps. You can choose categories like News & Entertainment, Communication & Social, and All Other Apps.

  • Download and install the AI image creation capabilities. You can trigger this by launching the Image Playground app and following the on-screen prompts.

  • Set up ChatGPT inside Siri (optional). Go to Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > ChatGPT. You can connect an existing ChatGPT account or use it without an account.

Using Apple Intelligence:

Apple Intelligence features on the iPhone can be categorized into three sections:

  • Writing Tools:

    You can expand on your own writing, and summarize other text. Screenshot: Apple

    • Accessible in any app with a text box.

    • Select text and tap "Writing Tools" on the toolbar.

    • Features:

      • Rewrite text in a specific style or tone.

      • Proofread for errors.

      • Expand or shorten text blocks.

      • Compose new text with ChatGPT.

      • Summarize text (options include Summary, Key Points, List, or Table).

  • Image Creation:

    Image Playground lets you combine different ideas together. Screenshot: Apple

    • Image Playground app: Create images from text prompts. You can add themes, costumes, and other tweaks to your prompts.

    • Genmoji: Create emojis from text prompts. Access the Genmoji symbol on the right of the emoji keyboard.

    • Image Wand: Turn rough sketches into AI images. Located in the drawing tools within the Notes app (tap the pen icon then the wand).

  • ChatGPT in Siri:

    • Siri suggests using ChatGPT for specific prompts and questions.

    • You can also request Siri to use ChatGPT, for example, "Hey Siri, use ChatGPT to plan a birthday party for a 5-year-old that lasts an hour."

    • Visual Intelligence (iPhone 16 exclusive):

      • Launch the Camera app and aim it at an object.

      • Press and hold the Camera Control button and tap the speech bubble.

      • ChatGPT will describe the object and provide additional information.

Upcoming Features:

  • More advanced and personalized Siri responses are expected for iOS 18.4.

  • Apple is reportedly developing its own ChatGPT competitor for Siri.

  • More picture styles are coming to Image Playground.
